DMC: Leading the way in improving vessel performance

DMC: Leading the way in improving vessel performance

4 min

Understanding the everyday challenges that shipowners face has always been the basis of DMC’s search for solutions to improve the performance of various ship types. It’s why we try to get feedback from clients as often as we can – and on all levels -, why we set up long term research projects, and why our people focus on  reliability, sustainability, and innovation. This leads to solutions for challenges such as minimising downtime, enhancing fuel efficiency, ensuring regulatory compliance, and improving manoeuvrability in markets such as inland shipping, defence, port operations, fishing, yachting, and ocean transport.

Goals, focus, mentality
In the ever-evolving maritime industry, DMC aims to stand out not just as a supplier of high-quality marine equipment, but as a true partner. Our guiding principle is ‘Improving Vessel Performance’, and it drives everything we do, from product design and production methods to innovation, customer collaborations, service and maintenance.

Our goal is to contribute to the success of our clients by delivering products and services that enhance the operational efficiency of vessels, reduce environmental impact, and optimise the operational costs for shipowners. Concrete: high-lift rudders, heavy-duty steering systems, propeller nozzles (and dedicated production machinery), winches, anchors, 24/7 worldwide maintenance services, and much more. We develop our portfolio mostly in-house and further develop it by listening to our customers: decision-makers, technical staff, operational staff, and of course crew members.

Innovations and product excellence
DMC’s reputation for innovation is built on decades of experience and a deep understanding of the maritime industry. For example, the redesigned Optima nozzle is proof of our commitment to push forward. Commercially, there was no reason to change anything about this successful product. Still, we took it to both the digital and physical workbench, optimised it through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and re-launched in 2023. Result: the new Optima nozzle offers up to 3.4% more thrust, translating into lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. This kind of incremental improvement is what sets DMC apart and ensures our clients to stay ahead of the curve.

Other examples from our portfolio are the Flex Tunnel, a unique retractable tunnel system that significantly improves propulsion efficiency in shallow waters, or our Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART™) that reduces resistance and cavitation, enhancing fuel efficiency across various vessel types. Both are about delivering tangible, measurable benefits that improve the overall performance of our clients’ vessels.

Customer collaboration
At DMC, we believe that success comes from collaboration, internally and externally. That’s why we have long-standing relationships with many Dutch, European and globally operating clients, both shipowners and shipbuilders.

Working closely with them means aligning our processes and products to match their innovative approach to sailing, shipping or shipbuilding. This ‘same wavelength’ philosophy ensures that every product we deliver is suited to their operational requirements, from steering gear to propeller nozzles and rudder systems.

Striving for sustainability
Improving vessel performance is not just about operational efficiency; it’s also about sustainability. DMC works hard to be at the forefront of developing solutions that reduce the environmental impact of maritime operations. Our Energy Saving Devices are designed to minimise water resistance, leading to significant fuel savings and lower emissions.

By focusing on products that have a minimal impact on marine life and the environment, DMC is contributing to a more sustainable future for the maritime industry. A good example is the RMS, that has specifically been developed to increase safety during navigation by generating more steering power in the bow, especially to overcome lateral wind forces. With the RMS, a vessel’s steering movements are significantly reduced, resulting in less water resistance and fuel savings.

Global presence
With production facilities in the Netherlands, China, and Poland, and a global network supported by Damen Shipyards Group, DMC is uniquely positioned to serve clients worldwide. This global reach, combined with our deep industry knowledge and commitment to innovation, allows us to anticipate future challenges and continue improving vessel performance on a global scale. And when you need us now, we offer a 24/7 worldwide service and support network.

Future vision
As we look to the future, DMC remains dedicated to serving clients with a personal touch – indeed, many of our service engineers and sales engineers feel deeply and personally involved with ‘their’ clients and their fleet.

Expanding our product range and enhancing our services, especially with efficiency and sustainable sailing in mind, is on our daily agenda. Of course, this is only possible if we focus on the digitalisation of both our clients’ operations and our own processes. That’s why our control and monitoring brand DMC Dynamics focuses on enhancing ship safety and efficiency by real time controlling, monitoring and visualising the functioning of onboard systems.

DMC Dynamics develops smart control systems for the future, guided by a simple motto: improved maintenance planning, longer lifespan, and real-time insight into the condition of essential components. These are software and hardware control and monitoring systems for both our own systems and other digital maritime innovators.

More than a ‘supplier’
Damen Marine Components is more than a supplier; we are a trusted partner in the journey towards ‘Improving Vessel Performance’ of small and large ships, and simple or complex vessels that need to earn their keep 365/24/7 on rivers or oceans.

Through innovation, a customer-centric approach, and a commitment to sustainability we aim to be your ideal choice of partner when you are looking to improve your fleet’s efficiency and reliability.

We invite you to join us on this journey and discover how DMC can help you achieve your operational goals.
